Which route might fit?

This is an orientation tool, not an individual legal determination. Any result must be verified against the documents and current rules.

  1. 1. Have the institution and programme been verified?

Check the institution’s status, language, mode and level of study, fees, admission rules and whether the programme matches the migration purpose.

  2. 2. Is the educational qualification recognised?

Determine whether the document and translation suffice or whether NAWA information, legalisation/apostille or separate recognition is needed.

  3. 3. Which residence document and additional rights apply?

Visa, student residence and work entitlement are separate assessments. Check funds, insurance, accommodation and the consequences of changing or discontinuing studies.

Choosing an institution and programme

The first step is to verify the official status of the institution, programme, study mode and language. Marketing material or an agent’s assurance alone does not establish that the programme supports admission, a visa, residence or work entitlement.

  • Check the institution, programme, accreditation and authority to admit foreign students.
  • Distinguish full-time, part-time, doctoral-school and other forms of education.
  • Review tuition, refund, withdrawal and removal-from-register rules.
Next section: Admission and recognition of qualifications

Admission and recognition of qualifications

Universities set their admission rules, while recognition of a foreign school certificate or degree also depends on legislation, international agreements and the document’s status. Automatic recognition, a NAWA statement and nostrification are different mechanisms.

  • Confirm that the qualification gives access to the relevant study level in the country of issue.
  • Use NAWA/KWALIFIKATOR to check whether an individual statement or another procedure is required.
  • Verify legalisation, apostille and sworn-translation requirements for the specific admission process.
Next section: Student visa and preparing to travel

Student visa and preparing to travel

University admission does not automatically result in a visa. The consul separately assesses the visa application, purpose and conditions of stay and supporting documents. Following the 2025 changes, recognition of school qualifications, document authenticity and the genuine purpose of study may be particularly important.

  • Use the current document list and appointment system of the competent consulate.
  • Distinguish admission documents from visa, insurance and financial evidence.
  • Check the consequences of changing institution or programme after visa issuance.
Next section: Student residence and MOS

Student residence and MOS

Since 27 April 2026, an application for temporary residence for studies is filed electronically through MOS under the rules applicable to that procedure. The applicant must demonstrate a genuine study purpose, required funds, insurance and institution documents; online filing does not remove later in-person formalities.

  • File during legal stay and retain the UPO and payment confirmations.
  • Prepare institution confirmation and evidence of tuition, funds, insurance and return costs.
  • Respond in time to requests concerning the passport, identity verification, fingerprints and missing documents.
Next section: Maintaining status during studies

Maintaining status during studies

Student residence requires not only obtaining a decision but also maintaining the genuine purpose of stay. Withdrawal, removal from the student register, insufficient progress, leave, or a change of institution or programme may affect a visa, pending case or granted permit.

  • Update the authority when a change affects the basis of a pending case or decision.
  • Retain enrolment, payment, attendance and academic-progress evidence.
  • Do not assume that a residence card alone guarantees re-entry or unrestricted changes to the purpose of stay.
Next section: Working while studying

Important date or procedure change

Working while studying

Work entitlement depends on the specific basis of stay and type of studies. An appropriate student visa or permit under Article 144(1) may allow work without a work permit, but not every school, mode of education, visa or mere filing of an application creates that entitlement.

  • Check the residence title, study mode and exemption basis before starting work.
  • Work entitlement while awaiting a decision continues only in specified circumstances.
  • Work should not undermine the genuine study purpose or required academic progress.
Next section: After graduation

After graduation

Graduation does not automatically extend lawful stay. In appropriate circumstances, a graduate of a Polish university may apply once for a nine-month permit to seek work or start a business. A graduate’s work-permit exemption and lawful residence are separate issues.

  • Plan the next residence basis before the current document or studies end.
  • Check whether the diploma and completed study mode provide a work-permit exemption.
  • Study periods may be counted differently for EULT; citizenship has separate rules.

Frequently asked questions about this guide

Does university admission guarantee a visa or residence permit?

No. Admission, a visa and a residence permit are separate procedures. The consul or voivode separately examines the documents, funds, insurance and genuine purpose of stay.

Can every student work without a work permit?

No. Entitlement depends on the type and mode of study and the specific residence basis. A student card, attendance at any school or merely awaiting a decision does not automatically create an exemption.
