How to get a residence permit in Poland? 2026 Current
Update — legal status as of 22 August 2026: Applications for temporary residence, permanent residence and EULT have been filed electronically through MOS since 27 April 2026; procedure-specific statutory exceptions may apply to temporary residence. For paper applications covered by the change, receipt by the authority before 27 April, rather than merely posting, is relevant. Electronic filing does not remove later personal identity and passport verification, fingerprints, signature specimen or other formalities.

In recent years, Poland has become one of the most popular European countries for studying, working and living. For this reason, the question “How do I obtain a residence permit in Poland?” is among the most frequently searched topics.

There are many different types of residence permits in Poland, depending on the purpose. In this article:

  • Student residence permits in Poland,
  • Worker residence permits in Poland,
  • family reunification residence permits,
  • graduate residence permit,
  • residence permit through a company,
  • permanent residence

We provide a general overview of the most common types of residence permits.

1. Student Residence Permit in Poland

This is one of the most common types of application for foreign nationals studying at university in Poland.

The following documents are generally required:

  • university acceptance letter or proof of active student status,
  • health insurance,
  • proof of accommodation,
  • proof of financial means,
  • passport.

In recent years, in particular:

  • attendance record,
  • academic performance,
  • active enrolment checks

are being examined in greater detail.

Student statuses are generally granted based on the duration of study.

2. Work Permit in Poland

Foreigners working in Poland may apply for a work-based residence permit.

These applications usually require:

  • an employment contract,
  • employer documents,
  • salary details,
  • terms of employment,
  • ZUS records

are being reviewed.

Incomplete or incorrect employer documents may prolong the process.

Official notification procedures are particularly important in cases of a change of employment.

3. Family Reunification Residence Permit in Poland

Family reunification residence permit:

  • spouse,
  • child,
  • in some cases, parents

can be applied for.

The most common applications:

  • through a Polish spouse,
  • through a foreign spouse,
  • through a child

are made.

In these processes:

  • the validity of the marriage,
  • cohabitation,
  • address records,
  • financial circumstances

play a significant role.

4. Graduate Residence Permit (Absolwent) in Poland

In Poland, university graduates may, in certain circumstances, apply for a post-graduation residence permit.

This application is particularly for:

  • job seeking,
  • career planning,
  • and

.

University graduation certificates and educational background are important in the process.

5. Residence Permit via a Company in Poland

Individuals who have established a company in Poland or hold a position in company management may apply for a company-based residence permit.

These applications typically require:

  • company activities,
  • financial status,
  • business planning,
  • tax records,
  • the company’s operational activity

are assessed.

In particular, applications made via a limited liability company (spółka z o.o.) may be subject to a detailed review.

6. Permanent Residence Permit in Poland (Pobyt Stały)

Permanent residence may be granted where the conditions of a specific statutory ground are met; long residence in Poland alone does not automatically create eligibility. Polish origin or a Pole’s Card, marriage to a Polish citizen with its additional conditions, and certain protection or family situations are separate grounds.

The period and evidence required differ by ground; there is no single period for every application. For example, a Pole’s Card holder may apply without a fixed prior period of residence in Poland if the conditions of that ground are met. Permanent residence must be distinguished from EULT.

7. Long-Term EU Residence in Poland

Under the ordinary EULT route, the required five years of legal and continuous residence must immediately precede filing; a missing period should not be assumed to mature while the case is pending. Not every period of stay is counted in the same way.

In the general continuity calculation, a single absence should normally not exceed 6 months and all absences combined should not exceed 10 months. The statute provides justified absences and different rules for qualifying Blue Card cases. Income, insurance, accommodation and Polish-language knowledge also require separate assessment.

How Long Do Residence Permit Applications Take in Poland?

Actual processing time depends on factors including the permit type, completeness of the documents, the competent authority and its current workload. Statutory procedural periods do not guarantee that a particular case will be completed by a specific date.

It is therefore important to prepare applications well in advance.

The New MOS System

From 27 April 2026, applications for temporary residence, permanent residence and EULT are generally filed electronically through MOS; procedure-specific statutory exceptions may apply to temporary residence. In a covered case, merely posting a paper application is insufficient: an application that did not reach the authority before launch is generally left without examination.

An application may be signed with a trusted profile, qualified electronic signature or, where applicable, a personal signature. After electronic filing, the authority may require personal identity and passport verification, fingerprints, a signature specimen, supplementary information or documents. MOS is the technical filing route and does not replace the correct legal basis and evidence.

Why is Professional Support Important?

Residence permit processes in Poland are not merely about submitting documents.

Throughout the process:

  • official correspondence,
  • responding to requests for missing documents,
  • monitoring deadlines,
  • legal assessments

play a crucial role.

Even a minor error:

  • lead to a rejection decision,
  • prolong the process,
  • legal residency issues

.
